Tumakuru, Apr 5: The Janaushadhi Kendras, established under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), have brought immense relief to residents in Tumakuru by significantly reducing their medical expenses.

The affordable medical outlets are offering generic medicines at prices 50–90% lower than those charged by private pharmacies. Locals, especially the poor and marginalised, are benefitting immensely from the initiative, which aims to make healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Many customers have shared their positive experiences, noting that medicines that previously cost them around Rs 1,500 at private chemists are now available for as low as Rs 200 at Janaushadhi Kendras.

“I have a heart condition and used to spend nearly Rs 6,000 a year on medicines. After switching to the Janaushadhi Kendra, my annual cost has come down to Rs 1,000,” said a grateful beneficiary.

Pasha, a regular visitor, said, “This has been highly beneficial for us.” Echoing the sentiment, another beneficiary added, “I used to spend Rs 600–700 at private stores. Now I get the same medicines for just Rs 300 here.”

The PMBJP initiative, which aims to ensure the availability of quality generic medicines at affordable prices, has witnessed tremendous expansion. By March 2025, over 15,000 Janaushadhi Kendras had been established across every district in the country.

Apart from reducing healthcare costs, the scheme also provides a platform for self-employment, thus supporting local economies while serving the healthcare needs of the public.
