Dubai Launches First Road Lit by Solar Energy

Dubai, Jan 18 (IANS/WAM): The ministry of public works in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched the first road in the emirate that uses solar-powered street-lights.

The 11-km Wadi Sidr Area was selected for the project, which does not require electrical wires.

The solar lighting system contributes to reduction of carbon emission, hence also reducing the environmental impact on the surrounding areas. It is also low maintenance.

Abdullah Al Nuaimi Belhef, under-secretary of the ministry of public works, said the successful achievement in the project means that the concept can be applied in all road projects.

He said solar lights save more than the traditional electric lighting systems.
