Flick falls in love with Barcelona, but keeps future open

Barcelona, Apr 11: FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has said he is thoroughly enjoying his time in Catalonia, both personally and professionally, but made it clear that he is not the kind of coach who seeks long-term contracts just for security.

Speaking at a press conference, Flick, who took over at the start of the 2024-25 season following the departure of Xavi, said, “I enjoy the people in Barcelona, and I’m very happy with my wife here. It’s a new experience, and I have a lot of energy. I think about the things we can do to improve, because we have the potential.”

The German tactician, best known for leading Bayern Munich to a historic sextuple in 2020 including an 8-2 thrashing of Barcelona in the Champions League was appointed on a two-year contract until June 2026.

“I’m not the kind of coach who signs a three-year deal just to feel safe. What I like is working for this club, the best club in the world. We’re not done here. I want to finish the job on a high note,” he added.

Flick’s tenure has already seen a massive turnaround. After a disappointing 2023-24 season, Barcelona now lead the La Liga table, are set to face Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, and recently stunned Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

Under his leadership, Barça have developed one of the most dangerous attacking lineups in Europe, raising hopes of a historic treble this season.

Looking ahead to the second leg against Dortmund, Flick said that squad rotation would be crucial. “We have to keep in mind that we need fresh legs. It's important to rest some players. Our physical condition is top.”

Despite all the speculation about his future, Flick insisted that he remains focused on the present. “I’ve been here for just a year. If we’re happy, we’ll stay another year. Right now, everything is incredible.”

With the possibility of silverware on all fronts, Hansi Flick seems to be scripting a new chapter of glory at Camp Nou, even as he keeps his future open-ended.
