Qatar, Apr 21: The much-awaited Tulu Jaatre made a grand return on February 7 at the Old Ideal Indian School Grounds in Doha. Organised by Tulukoota Qatar, an associate organisation of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) under the aegis of the Indian Embassy, the event was a spectacular success, drawing over 5,000 attendees.
Once again, Tulu Jaatre brought to life the cultural vibrance, warmth, and flavours of Tulunadu. From traditional food stalls to captivating stage performances, the event recreated the charm of Coastal Karnataka, drawing not only Tuluvas and Kannadigas but also members of Qatar’s wider expatriate community.




















The entrance to the venue was adorned with a stunning depiction of the iconic Pili (tiger) face, invoking nostalgia and pride. Traditional décor and colourful buntings transformed the grounds into a festive haven.
Grand opening and cultural showcase
The event began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by Tulukoota Qatar president Sandesh Anand, alongside dignitaries including social activist Eshwar Malpe, MasterChef India winner Mohamed Ashiq, and several sponsors and community leaders.
Cultural secretary Divyashree introduced the evening’s emcee, RJ Anurag Bangera, who took the audience through Tulukoota Qatar’s journey and the evolution of Tulu Jaatre since its inception in 2019. A grand welcome procession, accompanied by Nasik Dhol and Tulunadu Thase, set the stage for an unforgettable evening.
President Sandesh Anand, in his welcome address, emphasised the inclusive nature of the event, noting how its reach transcends caste and religion, celebrating unity through culture. He acknowledged the overwhelming support from various Karnataka-based associations and Apex Bodies, as well as sponsors whose contributions made the event possible.
Recognitions and awards
Tulukoota Qatar took the opportunity to honour its members for achievements in academics, sports, and social service. Among the recipients was Mohamed Ashiq, winner of MasterChef India, who expressed his gratitude for the recognition.
The annual 'Tulunada Bolpu Award' was presented to Eshwar Malpe, renowned for saving over 70 lives and recovering nearly 1,000 bodies from drowning incidents. Apex Body presidents and management committee members from ICC, ICBF, and ISC were also felicitated.
Additionally, past vice president Abdulla Monu was honoured for receiving the Dakshina Kannada Rajyotsava Award 2024. Senior members Yashpal Suvaran and Sandeep Mallar and their families were recognised for their longstanding voluntary service as they prepare to leave Qatar.
Coastal cuisine and traditional games
The food stalls were a major attraction, offering delicacies such as kori rotti, mutton gassi, neer dosa, patrode, charmburi chaat, meen gassi, jilebi, holige, and gadbad. Traditional games such as Tarayi Da Katta, Gargara Mandala, and Bottle Gala entertained attendees of all ages. Ammana Tammana stall won the best stall award.
Cultural extravaganza
Stage performances were a major highlight, choreographed and presented by Tulukoota members and cultural teams. Highlights included:
- Jaatre Dance by Raj and Rakshit
- Puppet Show-themed dance by Pooja Jiten
- Rope Yoga by Ashwini and Niveditha
- Yakshagana directed by Sumanth Shetty
Performances from Karnataka Sangha Qatar, MKP Mallar Dance Team, and Thalim and Magic Feet Dance School added to the festive spirit.

The event concluded with an exciting raffle draw, with bumper prizes including a refrigerator and a television, sponsored by Safari.
