Mangaluru, Apr 24: The long-awaited highway development and maintenance works between Surathkal and BC Road, falling under the jurisdiction of the New Mangalore Port Road Company Limited (NMPRCL), will begin on April 25 at 3:30 pm.
It was formally inaugurated by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta in a ceremony held near the highway adjacent to Govinda Dasa College in Surathkal on Thursday, April 24. The project includes major repair, resurfacing, and installation of safety measures along the national highways.






Alongside MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, MLAs Dr Bharath Shetty Y, Vedavyas Kamath, and Rajesh Naik, as well as officials from NMPRCL was present at the event.
The NMPRCL has earmarked a total of Rs 28.58 crore for the repair, resurfacing, and maintenance of approximately 37.42 kilometres of highway stretches passing through key parts of Dakshina Kannada district, especially within the Mangaluru urban area. This includes roads from Surathkal to Nanthoor, BC Road to Padil, and the bypass from Nanthoor Junction to Padil. Mugrodi Constructions has been awarded the contract for the entire project.
The project will specifically include resurfacing of 11.084 kilometres of roads from Surathkal to APMC, Kuloor to AJ Hospital, and Nanthoor to Padil. Additional works will involve clearing vegetation along the roadsides, cleaning, maintenance of roadside areas, and implementation of highway safety measures.
The modernization and safety enhancements for roads connecting to New Mangalore Port had been delayed due to funding constraints. However, thanks to the relentless efforts of MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, these critical road stretches are now finally set for a much-needed transformation.
