Rain, thunderstorms cause damage in parts of Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Parts of Dakshina Kannada district witnessed rain accompanied by thunder and lightning over the past few days, with damage reported from several villages in Beltangady taluk on Thursday night.

Villages including Mundaje, Kalmund, Kadirudyavara, Neriya, Thotattadi, Chibidre, and Charmadi experienced scattered damage due to falling trees and strong winds. In Mittottu, Mundaje, a tree collapsed on a daivasthana (spirit shrine), causing damage. At Pilathadka near the Kalmund-Dharmasthala road, a tree fell on a power line, damaging electric cables. A power pole was brought down at Kochchi, Kadambally. Thousands of arecanut and rubber trees were uprooted, leading to agricultural loss.

Due to emergency maintenance on Thursday, most areas in the taluk experienced power outages until 6 pm. Power was gradually restored in rural regions by Friday afternoon. Damage to electric lines and equipment due to lightning was also reported.

In Subrahmanya and surrounding areas, heavy rain accompanied by thunder struck on Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. The downpour lasted for an hour and was reported in Kaikamba, Kulkunda, Bilinele, Ainekidu, Yenekallu, Balpa, Guthigaru, and Kollamogru. Parts of Sullia taluk also received light showers.

Several regions in Dakshina Kannada, including Sullia and Subrahmanya, witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder on Friday. While the morning remained hot and sunny in most areas, the Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rain with thunderstorms along the coast from April 26 to 29 and issued a yellow alert for the region.
