Udupi, Apr 28: Lok Sabha MP from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency, Kota Srinivas Poojary, stressed that industries operating in the district must prioritize providing employment to local residents based on eligibility.

He was presiding over an interaction meeting with industrialists regarding local employment opportunities, held at the Dr V S Acharya Auditorium of the Rajatadri District Panchayat in Manipal.

Referring to the recommendations of the Dr Sarojini Mahishi Report, Poojary stated that industries must allocate more than 65% of posts in A, B, and C categories to local residents on a priority basis, according to eligibility.

He further emphasized that 100% of D category posts should be reserved for local candidates, as mandated by the report. He noted that some industries employ workers from other states, citing a lack of interest among locals. To address this, he urged industries to publicize vacancies through gram panchayats and proactively offer jobs to local candidates.

Deputy commissioner Dr K Vidyakumari, addressing the gathering, pointed out that an increasing number of youth from the district are migrating elsewhere for employment. This trend could eventually create a shortage of caregivers for elderly family members, she warned. She insisted that industries must comply with the Dr Sarojini Mahishi Report and prioritize candidates proficient in Kannada. Non-compliance would lead to action, she cautioned.

It was also mandated that industries must display name boards with at least 60% of the text in Kannada, with the remaining 40% permitted in other languages. Non-compliance would attract fines. Additionally, product packaging must display the name of the manufacturing unit and essential details in Kannada.

Industries were further instructed to immediately report to the nearest police station if any Bangladeshi nationals are found employed.

The meeting was attended by Joint Director of the Industries Department Nagaraj V Nayak, president of the District Small Industries Association Harish Kundar, various district-level officials, industrialists, and others.
