New Delhi, Apr 30: The Congress party has issued a firm directive to its leaders, emphasizing strict adherence to the party’s official stance on the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack. Leaders have been cautioned against making independent statements on the matter, with the party stating that only the position articulated by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and authorized All India Congress Committee (AICC) office-bearers should be publicly represented.
General secretary K C Venugopal made it clear that any deviation from this established position would be treated as a serious violation of party discipline. In a communication to party leaders, Venugopal reiterated that the Congress had expressed its ‘deep anguish over the reprehensible terrorist attack in Pahalgam’ and extended its ‘unwavering solidarity’ with the nation in this time of grief..

The directive follows remarks made by some Congress leaders that sparked controversy, leading to accusations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that certain members were echoing ‘Pakistan’s language.’ The Congress Working Committee (CWC) had passed a resolution on April 24, condemning the Pahalgam attack, allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan, as an attack on India’s values. The resolution also called for an in-depth investigation into intelligence lapses and security failures.
Venugopal underscored the importance of unity and responsibility at this critical juncture. He stated, “The Indian National Congress must demonstrate unity, maturity, and responsibility — qualities that have defined its conduct throughout decades of national service, whether in government or opposition.”
He further emphasized that the CWC resolution, passed during its meeting on April 24, 2025, must guide all party communications. Only authorized spokespersons are allowed to comment publicly, with a strong reminder to align their statements with the party's official stance.
Venugopal added, “Every Indian seeks justice for the families of innocent citizens who lost their lives, as well as accountability from the government. The Congress Party has always prioritized national interests during moments of crisis.” He concluded by warning that any violation of the directive would result in disciplinary action without exception.
