Chennai, May 1: In a night to remember at Chennai’s iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, Punjab Kings’ leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal etched his name into Indian Premier League (IPL) folklore by bagging a sensational hat-trick against five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), becoming the tournament’s all-time leader in four-wicket hauls.
Chahal, known for his guile and game-changing spells, delivered a match-defining performance, finishing with remarkable figures of 4/32 in just three overs. His lethal spell not only shifted the momentum in favour of Punjab Kings but also made history — it was the first-ever hat-trick taken against CSK in IPL history and only the second at the Chepauk after Lakshmipathy Balaji’s memorable hat-trick in the inaugural season in 2008.

This hat-trick marked Chahal’s second in the IPL, placing him in elite company alongside Amit Mishra (3 hat-tricks) and Yuvraj Singh (2). His feat also added another feather to Punjab Kings’ cap — the fifth hat-trick in the franchise’s history, joining the ranks of Yuvraj Singh (2), Amit Mishra, and Sam Curran.
With this incredible outing, Chahal surged past stalwarts like Sunil Narine (8), Lasith Malinga (7), and Kagiso Rabada (6) to become the IPL’s leading bowler in four-plus wicket hauls, with a total of nine.
Even more rare was the context — this was Chahal’s second instance of claiming four wickets in a single over, a feat previously achieved only by Amit Mishra (SRH vs PWI, 2013), Chahal himself (RR vs KKR, 2022), and Andre Russell (KKR vs GT, 2022).
As the IPL 2025 season progresses, Chahal continues to prove why he’s considered one of the league’s most dependable and match-winning bowlers. His ability to step up in crunch situations and deliver under pressure keeps his stature soaring, making every performance a spectacle for cricket lovers.
