New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): The Congress Friday said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's Sadbhavna mission fast at Godhra "lacked sincerity of purpose" and wondered if he was expiating for the 2002 communal riots in the state.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi accused Modi of speaking with "a forked tongue" and trying to gain cheap political mileage.

"Is he by any chance expiating for the sins of his government during whose tenure over 2,000 lost their lives? Is he expiating for the fact that prosecutions and actions taken were not impartial and objective and therefore, hundreds of cases were transferred out of Gujarat by the Hon'ble Supreme Court? So the moment he clarifies, we will be able to comment," Singhvi said.

He said Modi's "so-called fast" lacked "sincerity of purpose".

"So long as he does not have sincerity of purpose, it is no point practicing political drama because you cannot fool even some of the people some of the times," Singhvi said.

Modi staged a daylong hunger strike as part of his 'Sadbhavna' fast in Godhra and said his state had shown that the politics of development can work.

Modi's fast comes nearly a month ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Godhra train burning and the communal riots that followed in the state, in which over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.
