Kanujj, May 4: A woman, aged around 40, was found murdered and her body dumped in a maize field in Tahsipur Thatia village of Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district on Sunday morning, police said.

The body, which bore injuries on the face and other parts, was discovered by a local farmer, Ramvilas, according to senior police officer Vinod Kumar. “The nature of injuries indicates that she was physically assaulted before being killed,” he said.

A forensic team was rushed to the scene to gather evidence. “Prima facie, this appears to be a murder case,” Kumar added.

Police found blood stains at two different locations in the field, along with broken bangles near the body further pointing to a violent struggle. The woman’s saree was missing, although her blouse and petticoat remained on the body, suggesting a possible attempt to disrobe her.

“We are probing all angles including sexual assault, but confirmation will only come after the post-mortem,” the official said.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear. “We are looking into whether the murder was linked to a family feud, property dispute or some other reason,” Kumar said.

Villagers said the woman's earrings appeared to have been forcibly removed, but police stated it was too early to confirm if robbery was involved.

The incident comes close on the heels of another shocking crime in the Thatia area. On Friday, Mahendra Jatav, a resident of Asare village, confessed to killing his teenage daughter in what appeared to be an honour killing. He allegedly murdered her with the help of two relatives and later burned her body in a jungle near Karsah village. To mislead investigators, he had filed a missing person complaint in February, aiming to frame his daughter’s lover. Jatav reportedly paid Rs 70,000 to two men to help dispose of the body.

Both cases have shaken the region, with police assuring that investigations are underway and justice will be served.
