Israel's security cabinet approves expansion of Gaza operations

Daijiworld Media Network - Jerusalem

Jerusalem, May 5: Israel's security cabinet on Monday approved an expansion of military operations in Gaza, including a plan to ‘conquer’ the Palestinian territory. This decision comes after the army mobilized tens of thousands of reservists for the offensive.

The approval follows mounting warnings from the UN and aid organizations about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by Israel's blockade.

The operation, set to involve holding territories within Gaza, was finalized after Israel’s army resumed intense airstrikes and ground assaults starting March 18. This comes amid a humanitarian catastrophe as the war with Hamas, which began in October 2023, enters a new phase.

The plan includes efforts to relocate Gaza's population south for their safety, as most residents have been displaced multiple times.

The cabinet, which includes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, unanimously backed the initiative to defeat Hamas and secure the return of hostages. This plan also aims for continued strikes against Hamas, though specifics remain undisclosed.
