Kaup, May 7: Police have successfully arrested an inter-state burglar who broke into a house in Mallaru and stole valuables, including cash and expensive watches.

The accused has been identified as Sanjay Kumar (32), a native of Gandhinagar, Somwarpet in Kodagu district, currently residing in a rented house at Bharat Nagar, Uliyargoli.

The burglary took place at the residence of R D Manzil in Mallaru. The house belongs to a woman residing in Saudi Arabia, who visits every 2-3 months. The accused, after confirming that no one was residing in the house, suspected that it contained gold ornaments and cash, and broke in to steal.

He managed to steal Rs 5,000 in cash and four watches worth around Rs 60,000. The incident came to light on May 1 when Imran, a relative of the homeowner, returned from Saudi Arabia and noticed suspicious activity on the CCTV footage. He informed his uncle Asif Ali, and upon checking the house, they found the main door broken. CCTV footage revealed that between 3 am and 4 am, the burglar forcefully broke the main door and accessed the house through the dining hall, damaging cupboards and stealing valuables.

Following a complaint, Kaup police began an investigation and received information that Sanjay Kumar had previously been involved in a bike theft case in the jurisdiction of Madikeri’s Madhavapur police station. He was also reportedly living in a rented house in Bharat Nagar. Acting swiftly, the police conducted a raid and apprehended the accused.

Under the guidance of CPI Jayashree Mane and the leadership of SI Tejaswi, head constable Narayan and constable Raghu arrested the accused and seized the four stolen watches along with a black Bajaj Pulsar bike from him.

Sanjay Kumar has an extensive criminal record with 36 theft cases registered against him in various police stations across the state. These include 27 cases in Somwarpet, two in Virajpet Rural, and one case each in Suntikoppa, Mysuru Vijayanagar, Kushalnagar, Channarayapatna (Hassan), and Arkalgud police stations.
