Mangaluru, May 8: The Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has issued a stern warning to the public against spreading communal hatred, false information, and threatening messages on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp groups, and other social media, as cases of such offences have sharply increased in recent days.
Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal said the police department is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Over 30 such cases have been registered across various police stations in the last week alone. A special investigation team led by the ACP of the CEN Crime Police Station is probing these cases, and several individuals have already been questioned.
Agrawal noted that some offenders are posting malicious content through fake profiles or accounts registered overseas. However, he clarified that even such accounts can be traced and legal action can be taken regardless of where they were created. He urged young people to be mindful of their future and careers before posting anything on social media.
Report instead of forwarding hateful messages
The police commissioner urged citizens to refrain from forwarding hateful content. Instead, they should report such posts to the CEN Police Station and provide necessary information to help authorities take appropriate action.
Binding undertakings taken from accused
To prevent such crimes, preventive measures are being enforced under Sections 126 and 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Accused individuals are being made to sign undertakings promising good behaviour for a specific period. Repeat offences during this period can result in fines or imprisonment.
Stressing the need for everyone’s cooperation in maintaining Mangaluru as a peaceful, lawful, and united city, the commissioner appealed to the public to use social media responsibly.
Offences and punishments under BNSS:
- Promoting hatred between communities (Section 196): Up to 5 years imprisonment or fine, or both
- Inciting riots or violence (Section 192): Up to 6 months imprisonment or fine, or both
- Issuing threats (Section 351(1)): Up to 7 years imprisonment or fine, or both
- Online hate speech (Section 351(1)(a)): Up to 2 years imprisonment or fine, or both
- Spreading false information or fake news (Sections 353(1) & 353(2)): Up to 3 years imprisonment or fine, or both
