Tammun, May 16: Five Palestinians were killed on Thursday during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank village of Tammun. According to Tammun mayor Samir Qteishat, the Israeli forces besieged a house in the village center, leaving four bodies taken by the army and a fifth found charred after the troops withdrew.

The Israeli military stated the operation targeted two buildings in Tammun and Tubas that were allegedly used to plan terror attacks. “Soldiers identified armed terrorists barricaded inside a building. Following an exchange of fire, five terrorists were eliminated and another apprehended,” the statement read.

The West Bank has witnessed a sharp escalation in violence since the Gaza war erupted after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The conflict has since spread, with the Israeli army launching a large-scale operation in January, primarily targeting refugee camps in northern West Bank areas like Tammun.

On Wednesday, a shooting in the West Bank claimed the life of a pregnant Israeli woman and injured another, prompting Israel’s military chief to intensify the search for the attackers.

UN reports say the ongoing Israeli operation has displaced over 38,000 people in the West Bank. According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 934 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since the war began. In the same period, Israeli authorities say 34 Israelis, including soldiers, have died in attacks and clashes during raids.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and its settlements in the territory are considered illegal under international law.
