Margao, May 18: In a notable political moment, Goa's health minister Vishwajit Rane lavished praise on senior MLA and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat during a mega health camp held in Margao on Saturday. Rane not only referred to Kamat as his leader but also publicly apologised for any past grievances during their time in the same Cabinet.
Reflecting on his tenure as health minister in the Digambar Kamat-led Congress government from 2007 to 2012, Rane acknowledged the former chief minister’s unwavering support in expanding health services across Goa. “Digambar Kamat never blocked any proposal to take healthcare to villages and towns. Many of the existing health centres and hospitals were sanctioned by him,” said Rane.
Calling Kamat an ‘iconic leader,’ Rane highlighted his crucial role in approving medical projects at Sanquelim, Valpoi, Bicholim, Mapusa, and South Goa district. “Constructing a building is not enough. Equipping them with manpower and life-saving equipment is vital,” he said, adding that he would take local MLAs to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure medical centres in Curchorem, Tuem, and other regions are fully equipped.
He further credited Kamat for launching the 108 ambulance service during his chief ministership, which Rane had initiated as Health Minister. “It is a life-saving service that continues to benefit Goa to this day,” he noted.
Rane also emphasised the need to upgrade the South Goa District Hospital into a State-level facility, citing the need for a Cath lab, neurology unit, and full-time orthopaedic services. He said similar upgrades are essential across several health centres to ensure quality healthcare at the grassroots.
He fondly recalled the introduction of mobile clinics and mammography vans under Kamat’s leadership, adding that the concept is being revived today through new dental and health vans.
Rane concluded by reiterating his gratitude and continued support to the Margao MLA, calling Kamat a guiding force in his political journey.
