New Delhi, May 19: In a high-octane IPL 2025 clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Gujarat Titans (GT) made history by chasing down a daunting 200-run target without losing a wicket, thanks to masterful, unbeaten knocks from B Sai Sudharsan (108 off 61) and Shubman Gill (93 off 53).
The record-breaking 205-run opening stand not only secured a comprehensive ten-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) but also sealed GT’s place in the playoffs. This chase now stands as the highest-ever successful run chase in IPL history without the fall of a wicket.
Earlier, KL Rahul had dazzled for DC with a stunning 112* off 65 balls, showcasing elegant strokeplay and anchoring the innings. However, the lack of support from other batters meant DC’s 200-run total was insufficient.
Sudharsan set the tone early, racing to a 30-ball half-century, attacking with flair but sticking to conventional shots. GT assistant coach Aashish Kapoor praised the youngster for evolving his attacking game without abandoning technique. “He’s not slogging – he’s getting boundaries with proper cricketing shots,” Kapoor said post-match.
Gill, meanwhile, took a measured approach. After a cautious start (21 off 19 balls), he accelerated in style, hitting timely sixes and reaching his fifty in 33 balls. Kapoor credited Sudharsan’s brisk scoring for giving Gill the time to settle and unleash his strokes later.
“Even though Shubman wasn’t timing the ball well initially, he didn’t throw his wicket away. Sai’s early aggression took the pressure off him,” Kapoor explained.
Together, Sudharsan and Gill have now tallied 839 runs this season at an average of 76.27, with seven 50-plus partnerships – three of them century stands – making them the most successful opening pair in IPL 2025.
As GT’s openers pierced gaps and played classical strokes to perfection, they once again proved that power-hitting isn’t the only formula for T20 dominance. Their copybook batting lit up Sunday night, delighting cricket purists and sending a clear message to the rest of the league – traditional technique, when executed flawlessly, can be every bit as devastating.
