Udupi, May 20: MLA Yashpal Suvarna said unscientific development and lack of proper infrastructure has resulted in artificial flooding in the district.

Heavy rains triggered by an early cyclone ahead of the monsoon season have led to artificial flooding in several parts of Udupi city, he said. Responding to the situation, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna addressed the media, said, “Based on meteorological calculations, monsoon was expected to arrive after June 2, and we were preparing accordingly. Desilting of drains in the city areas was already in progress, including clearing out sludge from storm water drains and the main Rajakaluve.”

However, the sudden and heavy pre-monsoon rainfall caused by the cyclone has exposed infrastructure shortcomings. Several parts of the city reported artificial flooding, which the MLA Yashpal Suvarna attributed to a combination of unplanned urban development, poor drainage systems along national highways, and encroachments on natural water channels.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna, added that 10-foot-wide stormwater drains have been narrowed down to just 5 feet due to encroachments and unscientific development. The lack of proper infrastructure has made it difficult for rainwater to flow freely, causing water logging and inconvenience to the public.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna said, “I have instructed officials to take action without mercy. There is no need to issue notices in such cases. Suitable steps must be taken without compromise, regardless of the reasons.”

He also confirmed that drainage cleaning and removal of water-blocking weeds and plants will be completed by June 5. Furthermore, he pointed out that some storm water drains have been constructed unscientifically, and even some homeowners and property developers have carried out construction in a way that obstructs the natural flow of water.

Yashpal Suvarna stated that all obstacles preventing smooth water flow have been identified and will be cleared on priority, and reiterated that authorities must act swiftly and decisively to prevent such issues during the full monsoon season.
