Hong Kong, May 28: Sixteen-year-old Ranveer Mitroo got off to a flying start at the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) Junior Championship, carding an impressive two-under-par 69 to sit tied fourth after the opening round at the prestigious Hong Kong Golf Club on Tuesday.

Mitroo, part of a four-member squad representing India, showcased a fine blend of consistency and resilience. Starting strong with birdies on the second and fifth holes, he briefly slipped with bogeys on the ninth and 16th. However, the Delhi-based amateur and junior India No. 1 for 2024 recovered in style, finishing with consecutive birdies on the final two holes to close out a solid round.

Reflecting on his performance, Mitroo said, “The round was pretty okay. I made some good recoveries but also some silly errors. My approach for tomorrow is to rest well and analyse my statistics of today, to avoid making the mistakes I made today. I think an overall improvement in decision-making and execution is something I would want to work on.”

Compatriot Krish Chawla, also holding the junior India No. 1 title, ended the day tied for 16th after an eventful round of one-over 72. His scorecard included an eagle, three birdies, three bogeys, and a costly triple bogey.

Vietnam’s Tuan Anh Nguyen leads the field after a stunning six-under 65, with New Zealand’s Cooper Moore trailing just one shot behind.

In the boys’ team standings, the Indian duo of Ranveer and Krish combined for a one-under total of 141, placing them fifth. The Australian pair of Hamish Farquharson and Cooper Giddings currently lead the team event with a total of three-under 139.

On the girls’ side, Delhi’s Kashika Mishra held her own with a composed one-over 73, earning her a share of 10th place. The top-ranked junior and amateur in India notched two birdies and four bogeys over her round. Teammate Saanvi Somu closed the day in tied 17th position.

Together, Kashika and Saanvi posted a combined score of four-over 148, putting them seventh in the girls’ team competition. They trail the leading pairs from Thailand and South Korea by 11 strokes.

In the mixed team category, India’s pairing of Ranveer and Kashika stood at even-par 142, placing them in joint seventh.

With three rounds to play, Team India remains firmly in contention across categories, buoyed by Ranveer Mitroo’s standout performance and Kashika’s steady showing.
