Mangalore, Jan 24: The 27th national convention of environmental engineers on the theme ‘Green Technology’ organized by the Institution of Engineers (India) and hosted by Mangalore Local Centre, was inaugurated at Hotel Deepa Comforts here on Tuesday January 24.

N Vinay Hegde, chancellor, Nitte University was the chief guest on the occasion and inaugurator of the convention.

Delivering the inaugural address, he said that though there are more than 195 engineering colleges in the state, the type of engineers produced is a matter of concern as mere financial viability is deemed as success, sidelining the concern for nature.

He said that new industries should be environment-friendly, addind, "Waste disposal method followed by hospitals is a major factor in preserving nature."

He also pointed out that mining in Bellary had caused lot of problems to the environment.

"A few years back European countries had neglected nature, but now they are aware of importance of nature preservation," he said, and urged for a national policy on environment preservation.

Dr Vinod Tare, professor of civil engineering, IIT Kanpur, the guest of honor of the programme, said that green practice does not mean colouring everything with green paint, it means humans should not interfere in nature’s cycle. "In our nation only 30 to 40 days of average rainfall is reported. In places like Bihar, Delhi and other places of North India people are already facing problem of drinking water. Hence it is time to think and preserve our rivers from being contaminated, forests being destroyed," he added.

A K Sinha, chairman, environmental engineering division board, IEI presided over the programme.
K Balakrishna, chairman, organizing committee and Dr S Shrihari, organizing secretary among others were present.

There will be a session on alternative energy sources, challenges in green construction, transport, water and sanitation, environment friendly technologies in metallurgical and mining sector, innovations for environment preservation using biotechnological routes, green technology options in engineering industry and challenges to overcome ill effects of climate change.

Thanks to Mr. Vinaya Hegde for his valuable comments and inputs on the quality of Engineers. Our Educational system towards all Educational disciplines is moving slowly but moving in the right direction and this is an undeniable fact that each and every one of have to embrace.

Creating the right infrastructure for our Educational Institutes including the Human Resources require private and public funding with continuous and consistent support from the Government as well as from the Corporate sectors. Each and every plan and program takes time, thought and effort. As the population all over India is increasing, the need for Education is also obviously on the upward trend that needs to be tackled patiently professionally and systematically.

The income level of not only teachers and professors but also on all other disciplines in India have to be revised in accordance with the inflationery trend of the entire nation, and in comparison with the rest of the world. Again, its the Economy at home and Economy globally that needs to be taken into consideration.

There is an element of Educational learning attached to the process of being Educated in a fast growing country such as India, and therefore each and everyone of us have a consciencious duty and responsibility to shoulder without any exception. Having had the privilege of meeting Mr. Vinaya Hegde not too long ago, we have the best of confidence within ourselves that Mangalore will move forward with a favourable trend of progress with good leaders and intellectual leaders, and we extend our best wishes and support in every possible way. Qudha Afeiz.

It is true that we do not have quality engineers today. But where the engineers go. Everyone be he a Mechanical Engineer,Civil, electrical ,Computer science and other field look for job in the IT field .So when the top cream gets into these fields where the pay is much higher, can we expect the technological improvements to happen in the other fields with the 90% of the students left behind after joining the IT field. Where the qualified teachers or professors to teach the new students. A top institution like NITK today pay a gross salary of Rs 60,000 to a professor with PHD with 10 year experience. Where as the student of the same professor draws more than that within 2-3 years. So where is the attraction lies for the new students?. Under such situation can we expect quality education in the mass production institutions

The Quality of Engineer's depends on committment and to attain this there should be lot of co-ordination between the Students and the Faculty which is lacking. The facility provided in most of the famous institution is so poor and the Students who are committed to their studies will be demoralized. Paying donation is one thing but the quality of the Faculty is lacking except the big name of the institutions. So both Students and Faculty should work together to achieve the goal

Ya you are right Mr.Hegde.. we admire you for what you have done to the society but i guess if you take a 40% aggregate student with lakhs of donation into colleges in the name of management quote you are bound to have low quality engineers!!!
