‘Leaky Gut’ real but misunderstood, say experts

New Delhi, Jun 1: Dr Trisha Pasricha, a US-based neuro-gastroenterologist, has clarified the growing confusion around the term ‘leaky gut’, calling it a real but misunderstood condition in the medical world.

Taking to Instagram on May 27, Dr Pasricha explained that what is commonly referred to as "leaky gut" is medically known as increased intestinal permeability a phenomenon where molecules pass more easily from the intestines into the bloodstream.

“If your doctor says leaky gut isn’t real, they’re either unaware of the science or wary of how the term has been misused,” she said. However, she stressed that leaky gut is not a formal diagnosis but a normal physiological process influenced by factors like stress, infections and food.

She dismissed popular claims that leaky gut can be “cured” with supplements like probiotics or enzymes, saying such treatments lack scientific backing.

Meanwhile, Indian dietitian Lavleen Kaur echoed similar views in a past interview, stating that everyone’s gut is naturally permeable, but it becomes problematic only when harmful particles start leaking through. She said the gut’s health can be improved by avoiding processed foods and including probiotics, fermented vegetables and sprouted seeds, along with lifestyle changes like reducing stress, avoiding alcohol and getting enough sleep.

Both experts urged caution against misinformation while acknowledging the gut’s vital role in overall health.
