MRPL celebrates World Environment Day 2025 with strong call for sustainability

Mangaluru, Jun 7: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) marked World Environment Day 2025 with a solemn and spirited celebration at the MRPL employees recreation centre, underscoring its continued commitment to environmental sustainability and awareness. The event was themed around the global call to action ‘Ending Plastic Pollution'.

Renowned environmentalist Dr Radhakrishna Nair, widely acclaimed as ‘The Green Hero of India', graced the occasion as chief guest. The event also witnessed the presence of key dignitaries including Anthony S Mariyappa, IFS, DCF – KFD, Dr Maheshwari Singh, DEO-KSPCB, Mundkur Shyamprasad Kamath, managing director, Devendra Kumar, director finance, Ganesh S Bhat, IFS & CVO, and BHV Prasad, ED Projects.

The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and symbolic watering of a plant, signifying harmony with nature.

Suresh K Rao, GGM – HSE welcomed the gathering, followed by a comprehensive presentation of MRPL’s environmental performance highlights by Sudarshan M S, CGM – HSE.

A multilingual environment pledge was administered by Shrikrishna R Bharanekar, CGM – Operations (Kannada), Atul Bhogle, GM – HSE (Hindi), and Keshava Kumara K, GM – Vigilance (English), reaffirming collective responsibility towards the planet.

In his keynote address, Dr Nair urged individuals and corporations alike to be more self-aware in addressing environmental challenges. He lauded MRPL’s proactive initiatives, particularly its efforts in plastic waste reduction and sustainable operations.

Mundkur Shyamprasad Kamath, MD, MRPL, highlighted the company’s sustainability roadmap, including the commissioning of a pilot PET bottle recycling plant and patent filings aimed at fostering plastic circularity and innovative waste management solutions.

Additional addresses were delivered by Anthony Mariyappa, who elaborated on KFD’s afforestation efforts, and Dr Maheshwari Singh, who emphasized the adoption of the “5Rs” of pollution control Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.

MRPL’s senior leadership, including Devendra Kumar, director (Finance); Ganesh S Bhat, IFS, CVO; and BHV Prasad, ED – Projects, also shared insights on MRPL’s environmental stewardship and future sustainability plans.

The celebration concluded with the felicitation of winners from a series of competitions held as part of a month-long awareness campaign, which included mass tree plantation drives, beach clean-up activities, school outreach programmes, and theme-based competitions. Kanchan Deshwal, assistant engineer – HSE, ably compered the event. Arpit Gaur, assistant manager HSE introduced the chief guest, and Prasanna Kumar, GM – HSE delivered the vote of thanks.
