Update: January 26, 12.15 am

Moodbidri, Jan 25: Three persons including a woman were killed on the spot in an accident that occured at Kantavara cross, Beluvai here on Wednesday Janury 25 at around 8.30 pm.

The deceased have been identified as John Menezes (79); Sunil Clady Menezes (37) and his wife Veena Priya Menezes (27). The couple's two children, 3-year-old Cleon and 5-month-old Cliston who were also in the Sumo had a miraculous escape.

Two others who were in the Sumo were injured and have been admitted to Father Muller hospital in the city. They are Severine D'Souza (57) and Vijay Flora D'Souza (22).

The accident occured when the Tata Sumo (KA-19-Z-2143) in which the three were travelling rammed head-on into a private bus (Jai Vilasini) plying from Karkala to Moodbidri. The impact of the collision was such that the Sumo was pushed to some distance and was smashed, with its top ripped off.

They were from Katipalla and were on the way to St Lawrence Shrine in Attur Karkala for the annual festival.

The stretch of road was completely blocked for about 2 km. Eyewitnesses said that the Sumo was travelling at a high speed.

A case has been registered in Moodbidri police station.

I said that as I saw the impact where the accident took place... The impact of the accident was on the right of the Road. If the Tata sumo was on the correct path then the accidental spot should have been on the left of the road. I mean to say it should be on the way to karakala and not on the way to mangalore. But now it clearly show that the accident spot was on the way to mangalore..Thats the right of Tata sumo's way...

Neeraj Fernandes - yes I do agree with you concerning the path of the road .... straight and not curvy, if I have to believe you. Furthermore there is no reporting by Daijiworld that the Sumo was travelling in the wrong direction. How come you arrived at this theory?

Nirmala Noronha - I agree with you in to-to 100% concerning Bombay roads ... yes I too stay in Bombay and love to drive on Bombay's road - given the fact that the percentage of road discipline is considerably high, even though there could be unavoidable fatalities ... although it is very meagre and negligible compared to the horrendous accidental rates in Mangalore. Consider this ...

Bombay despite having a cash-starved Municipal Corporation lacks basic amenities to render to BEST. Yet despite this, people are concerned, drive with responsibility and HAVE concern towards their fellow mates UNLIKE Mangalore's innumerable bloodsucking ruthless moron bus drivers who are born to kill. Imagine the precious loss of lives Mangaloreans have lost all these years by the rash ruthless drivers of buses. Even the BEST buses are a very responsible lot despite its services falling under the State Government cadre.

On the contrary, I am surprised to see that BEST bus drivers, though ruthless they are, are forced to be patient and strictly adhere to directives issued by their Management. This should on the contrary have been opposite if they were to race against time. That means it would've resulted in many deaths but fortunately, Bombay has never seen a Mangalore type of situation till date in Bombay and it will NEVER see one. Correct me if I am wrong, Nirmala.

As Nirmala said, the action should be taken against the express bus owner. How can you say that aCCIDENT OCCURED DUE TO EXPRESS BUS? infact in this article itself it is given that due to hispeed from sumo caused accident.. I hope u can understand the article here. and morever i passed from that route yesterday morning and saw that the road is straight forward. no curves at all. What was the necessity to go in wrong way for the sumo driver and hit it to bus?

    LOOK AT MR. JOSSY,S ANGUISH.

    VERY VERY TRUE.

ONLY AND ONLY IF THERE COULD BE SPEED BREAKERS EVERY 100 METRES THESE OVERCONFIDENT IDIOTS WOULD BE FORCED TO DRIVE AT SAFE SPEEDS.

THIS IS NOTHING BUT CALLOUS BEHAVIOR OF THE MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL THAT HAS LED TO THIS TRAGEDY.

WHAT IS THE HURRY TO REACH THE HOLY PLACE?

HE COULD EVEN GO THERE AFTER THE FESTIVITIES WERE OVER.

AT LEAST THE CHILDREN WOULD STILL HAVE THEIR PARENTS.

Very very sad scene to look at it. Sad thing about this whole scene is that little children are without mother. What more sad it can be for mankind. These buses carry the name of God,such as Lady of Vellankani,Masha Alla,Shree Kateel so on. Who are they trying to please,God or Devil. These vehicle drivers worship the buses with flower and fragrance and then kill the public. Rogue Transport officers (RTO)are cross questioning Us, the tax payers who pay their wages, when we go to them to complain and laugh about it. They make fool of us in front of bus owners. I and my family was put in shame when we faced the Bus Owner, with the officer supporting the owner with ugly smile of His. Later they both went for a meal together. This is the very same reason why so many deaths are happening on road. No FEAR.

Very unfortunate and tragic accident! May the souls of the departed rest in Eternal Peace! These type of head on collisions are an everyday affair in and around Mangalore where there is absolutely no control on speed and road sense!! In such cases, the driver who is at fault should be punished severely so as to act as a detterant for other such road ragers. Pertinent to note is the recent judgement by the SC which upheld the 3 year imprisonment of Alistair Periera who killed 7 people during a bout of rash drunken driving in Bandra, Mumbai. In fact, the SC judges were so impressed about the fault of Alistair that they commented that the imprisonment given out should have been for a much longer period, but could not do so as the Govt. had not asked for more! This guy will now have to spend 3 years in jail. Something of this sort should be immediately done to pass a strong message to these "mrityudhoot" bus drivers and heavy compensation extracted from the owners, otherwise, these incidents will keep on happening again and again with more innocents losing their lives or getting maimed for life for no fault of theirs!! God save Kar-Nataka and India!!!

    May their souls RIP.
I don’t think these HEADLESS drivers are ever going to change.
Install speed breakers every 100 meters so that no one can drive beyond 40 kmph.

It is very distressing that this avoidable incident has been in existence for such a long period. It does not bring any cheer to read such ghastly accidents, day in and day out. If it was hijacking a bus yesterday, it is a fatal accident today and tomorrow the story will continue. Doesn’t the RTO and other concerned authorities have any sense of responsibility? They just stand and stare but do nothing. Enough is enough, let someone take the initiative and terminate such ghastly accidents once and for all, at least they can bring it down to the minimum possible if not eliminate it entirely?

Very sad News.. May the soul rest in peace.
In Mangalore, there no traffic rules nor there is any fine for reckless driving, hope somebody will put "Safe Driving Course" on T.V or online.. atleast some will watch and learn then teach to others how to save precious lives while they their hand are on under the Steering wheels.

May the soul of the departed Mr. John Menezes, Mr. Sunil Clady Menezes and Mrs. Veena Priya Menezes REST IN ETERNAL PEACE. May our beloved God give peace and comfort to the bereaved family and friends. God protected and saved the four other occupants in a miraculous way and we thank our Almighty for that. By looking at the pictures, it is a horrible sight. I do not understand why someone has to speed and that too with family. This is a lesson for others. Thanks Prasad Beluvai for the touching pictures.

GOD'S WAYS ARE DIFFICULT TO FATHOM FOR MAN.
THERE WILL BE DESPAIR ON ONE SIDE AND RELIEF ON OTHER.
CRY IF YOUR EYES HAVE TEARS LEFT.
FOR MAN HAS TO BEAR MUCH MORE IN HIS LIFE TIME.
MAY GOD ANCHOR THE SOULS OF THE DEPARTED.
MAY THE CHILD FIND NEW GROUNDS TO PUT HER FOOT ON.

Anyway forget it from someones mistakes a small girl has lost her mom, so whom should blame now bus or car drivers.
