Surat, Jun 10: In a heartbreaking incident, a 23-year-old fashion model from Gujarat’s Surat has died by suicide, sending shockwaves through the local fashion and textile industry. The deceased, identified as Anjali Alpesh Varmora, was a freelance model associated with several local studios and had also been working on textile and commercial modelling projects.
According to police reports, the tragic event occurred during the intervening night of June 7 and 8. Speaking to media, Surat DCP Vijay Singh Gurjar revealed that Anjali had shared some emotional social media status updates shortly before her death. However, none of the posts mentioned any names or specific issues.
“Anjali was engaged, and her wedding was initially scheduled for this year. However, it had been postponed to the next year due to the recent demise of her fiancé’s mother,” DCP Gurjar stated. He further added that Anjali had attempted to contact her fiancé before the incident, but he was reportedly unable to respond.
The police have also confirmed that Anjali was alone at her residence when the incident took place. Her family members were not at home at the time. Upon their return, they found the door locked from inside. Tragically, by the time they managed to gain entry, it was too late.
The fiancé, during preliminary questioning, stated that Anjali had not shown signs of distress during their recent interactions. Investigators are currently analysing her phone and social media activity for any clues that might indicate the cause behind the extreme step.
The fashion community in Surat has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Anjali as a promising talent who had made her mark in a competitive industry at a young age.
As the investigation continues, police have urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the grieving family. Authorities have reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and urged individuals facing emotional distress to seek support from professional counsellors or helpline services.
