Guwahati, Jun 10: Rosmita Hojai, a young woman from Assam’s Dima Hasao district who had travelled to Delhi to appear for a government examination, was found dead in Uttarakhand five days after she was reported missing. The tragic development has sent shockwaves across her native town of Sontilla Hojai.

Rosmita, who had travelled to Delhi for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam, went missing on June 5. Her death was confirmed on Tuesday by Dima Hasao chief executive member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa through a social media post.

“It is with a heavy heart I share that Miss Rosmita Hojai, a resident of Sontilla Hojai, who had been missing since 5th June 2025 in Delhi, has been found dead today in Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand,” Gorlosa wrote on Facebook.

Describing her death as an "unthinkable loss", he extended condolences to Rosmita’s family and thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Uttarakhand police for their support in the search operation. Gorlosa demanded strict legal action against the two individuals reportedly involved in the incident.

According to reports, Rosmita had travelled to Rishikesh on June 6 with two male friends—one of whom was her former classmate, Hemant Sharma, from Haryana—for a camping trip in Shivpuri. By the evening, her companions reported her missing. A local later informed authorities about seeing a woman drowning near the campsite.

Subsequently, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a search operation, and Rosmita’s body was recovered on Tuesday. Police are currently probing all angles, including the possibility of suicide, SHO Pradeep Chauhan of Munkireti Police Station said.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, and authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether foul play was involved.
