Pune, Jun 11: Tragedy struck Pune city on Wednesday morning when a 29-year-old woman riding pillion on a scooter was killed after a truck ran over the two-wheeler at Gangadham Chowk in the busy Market Yard area.

The deceased has been identified as Dipali Yuvraj Soni, who died on the spot. Her relative, 61-year-old Jagdish Soni, who was riding the scooter, sustained injuries in the accident, police said.

The mishap occurred shortly after the traffic signal turned green. CCTV footage from the junction shows the truck ramming into the scooter from behind, leading to a horrific fall that brought both riders under the heavy vehicle.

“It appears the woman came under one of the truck’s wheels after the rear-end collision, while the scooter got lodged under the front wheels. The man riding the scooter suffered injuries,” said an officer from Market Yard police station.

The truck driver, identified as 51-year-old Shaukat Ali Kulkundi, has been detained, and further investigation is underway.

Police are examining the CCTV footage as part of the inquiry into the exact cause of the accident.
