Goa, Jun 22: In a horrifying incident, a 50-year-old man has been arrested in North Goa for allegedly raping an 80-year-old woman who lived alone in her residence. The crime, police said, came to light when the accused attempted to sexually assault her a second time and was caught in the act by the survivor’s daughter.
According to police, the survivor had been living by herself in a small house after her daughters got married. One of her daughters regularly looked after her, sending food and daily necessities. On Friday, when the survivor’s granddaughter visited her with lunch, the elderly woman confided that she had been sexually assaulted the previous night by an unknown man.
Alarmed, the granddaughter informed her parents immediately. Police said the survivor’s daughter rushed to her mother’s home and was shocked to find a naked man attempting to sexually assault the elderly woman again. She raised an alarm and contacted her husband, who was en route. The accused fled the scene, hiding in nearby bushes.
A police team reached the spot shortly after being alerted and managed to locate and arrest the accused. He was identified as a former overseas technician who had returned to Goa and was living alone after being abandoned by his wife.
Authorities confirmed that the survivor’s statement was recorded in the presence of NGO representatives. The accused has been remanded in four-day police custody and further investigation is underway.
The disturbing incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection and surveillance measures for the elderly living alone.
