Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jun 22: A 35-year-old man was killed and two others were critically injured in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar late Thursday night, following a violent clash that erupted over a dispute regarding urinating near a poultry shop. The MIDC Cidco police have arrested five individuals, including the shopowner, in connection with the fatal attack.

The deceased, identified as Nitin Sankpal of Rajnagar, Mukundwadi, was reportedly attacked with a meat cleaver. His brother Sachin Sankpal (32) and their friend Datta Jadhav were also seriously injured and remain hospitalised.

Police stated that the altercation began when Nitin stepped behind a poultry shop to urinate after dinner at a nearby eatery. The shopowner, Mastan alias Nanna Qureshi, objected, leading to an argument. Sachin and Datta rushed to the spot upon hearing the commotion, and a violent fight broke out. In the heat of the moment, Qureshi allegedly attacked the trio with a cleaver typically used at the shop.

Nitin died on the spot, while Sachin and Datta were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The five arrested have been identified as:

• Mastan alias Nanna Qureshi (29), Indira Nagar
• Sameer Khan (19), Misarwadi
• Babar Shaikh (32), Mukundwadi Stop
• Sajid alias Sajju Qureshi (29), Ambikanagar
• Nasir Khan (20), of the Qureshi chicken shop

Police have invoked murder and attempt-to-murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Despite the severity of the charges, all accused were granted bail by the special court on Friday, reportedly due to technical grounds.

Deputy commissioner of police Prashant Swami said an appeal against the bail order will be filed in the High Court.

In a strong civic response to the violence, the local municipal corporation’s anti-encroachment squad demolished 229 illegal structures on Friday morning. These included tin sheds, garages, washing centres, and both temporary and permanent shops located along the Jalna-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Road — including the poultry shop owned by the main accused.

Additionally, Satara police arrested some of the accused in a pending dacoity case, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
