Udupi, Jun 26: A special awareness program was held in Silas PU College, Nittur, Udupi to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed globally on June 26, with a mission to highlight the dangers of drug abuse and the need to eliminate illicit trafficking.
The program began with the oath taking ceremony against drug abuse administered by the principal.
Addressing the students, principal of the college, Dr George said, “Drugs are the greatest evil for our society. Adolescence is the most crucial age with lots of distractions. For many teens’ illicit substance use and abuse become part of the landscape of their teenage years. Psychological distress, perception of extensive use by peers, impulsiveness and seeking of high sensation leads to drug addiction.”

Students actively participated in elocution, essay writing and collage making competitions.
The event also included the screening of a short video aimed at raising awareness against drug abuse.
Ramya delivered a talk focusing on drug awareness and addiction prevention. She stressed the importance of vigilance at the family, school, and community levels, pointing out that early intervention and consistent attention to children’s behaviour can help prevent them from falling into drug use.
Naveen S took the stage as the event compere.
Trustee of the institution, Sharlet Maben was present during the occasion.
