Maharashtra launches first E-Tractor, promises big savings and subsidies for farmers

Mumbai, Jun 29: Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Saturday unveiled the state’s first electric tractor, a move aimed at making farming more economical and environmentally friendly. The minister described the launch as a transformative step for the agricultural sector and claimed it to be India’s first registered e-tractor, officially recorded at the Thane RTO on Sunday morning.

Built specifically for agricultural use, the electric tractor dramatically reduces costs. “While diesel tractors cost Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 to plough an acre, the e-tractor does the same work for just Rs 300,” Sarnaik said, citing lower fuel and maintenance expenses as a major benefit for farmers.

The launch event was attended by Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil and representatives from the tractor’s manufacturing company.

Sarnaik also reiterated the government’s broader electric mobility goal of having 20–30% of vehicles on roads powered by electricity by 2030. In support of this, the state plans to introduce toll exemptions and direct subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, including e-tractors.

To ease adoption among farmers, Sarnaik said the Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation could soon offer interest-free loans for purchasing e-tractors.

An official added that the Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 will play a key role, offering subsidies of up to Rs 1.5 lakh on e-tractor purchases. “With minimal maintenance and operational costs 60–70% lower than diesel alternatives, e-tractors offer significant long-term advantages,” the official said.

The initiative is part of the state’s push for sustainable agriculture and greener transport solutions, combining cost-efficiency with environmental responsibility.
