Latur, Jun 30: In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the residents of Bhima Tanda in Udgir taluk, Latur district, a four-year-old girl lost her life at the hands of her own father, allegedly over a minor request for chocolate.

According to police sources, the accused, identified as Balaji Rathod, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. Rathod’s daughter, little Aarushi, had innocently asked him for money to buy a chocolate. Enraged by the request, he allegedly strangled the child to death using a saree.

It is learnt that Rathod was a habitual drinker and frequent quarrels at home had strained family relations. His wife Varsha had left him due to his violent behaviour and was staying at her parental home. The child was visiting him when the tragic episode unfolded.

Upon learning of the incident, Varsha rushed to the spot and lodged a complaint with the local police. Acting swiftly, officers registered an FIR and arrested the accused. He has been booked under charges of murder.

Speaking to the media, Varsha demanded the severest punishment, including capital punishment, for the man she once called her husband.

The police have begun further investigation into the case. The incident has left the local community in deep shock and mourning.
