Mangalore, Jan 29: Mulky Block Congress president, prominent leader of Billawa community, and former member of Karnataka legislative assembly Somapaa Suvarna passed away on Saturday January 28 in a private hospital. He leaves behind three sons and three daughters.
Suvarna, who started his career as a Hindi teacher, taught at a school in Hejamady Kodi. Later he entered into hotel business at Kinnigoli in partnership with Rukkaram Salian.
He served the Billawa community for over six decades as an active member, office bearer and president of Mulky Billawa Samaja. He was also actively involved in various organisations like Lions Club, Mulky Vijaya College administration, and other many social and religious organisations.
He was elected MLA during 1990-95 after defeating Amarnath Shetty of Janatha Dal. Providing housing facility to hundreds of poor was the highlight of his tenure as MLA.
Several political leaders including Dr V S Acharya, B Janardhana Poojary, Vinaya Kumar Sorake, Abhayachandra Jain, UT Khadar, K Amarnath Shetty and others have expressed shock on the death of Somappa Suvarna.
