Puttur, July 5: Following the arrest of the accused Krishna Rao in the shocking student pregnancy case in Puttur, local MLA Ashok Kumar Rai has taken a firm stand in support of the victim, urging people and political leaders alike to approach the matter with compassion and responsibility.
Speaking to reporters, Rai confirmed the arrest of Krishna J Rao (21), who was taken into custody on July 4 from T Narasipura, Mysuru, after absconding for several days. “The accused has now been apprehended, and the legal process is underway,” he said.

'This is not a political opportunity', says MLA, calls for compassion
“This is a deeply sensitive issue involving a young girl and a newborn child. It is not something to be used for political gain. If someone else were in my place, they might have politicised it. But I have not. My concern is the well-being and future of the victim and her baby,” Ashok Kumar Rai stated.
Rai further expressed hope that both the victim and the accused would be given the support they need to rebuild their lives. “Our goal is not to provoke division but to bring healing and justice,” he added.
Rai reacts to Puthila’s remarks
The MLA voiced disappointment over comments made by political opponent Arun Kumar Puthila. “His statement was unfortunate. I don’t know if he spoke with full understanding. I have stayed away from politicising this matter,” Rai said.
He also responded to the viral circulation of a photograph showing the accused with Puthila. “It’s true that the accused had worked with him. A photo went viral yesterday, but I will not comment on it. That is not my focus. I believe in resolving, not escalating.”
Leaders rally behind MLA
Several community figures stood alongside the MLA during the press briefing, including Kavu Hemanath Shetty, Krishnaprasad Alva, Nihal Shetty, and Jayaprakash Badinaru — lending visible support to Rai’s balanced and empathetic approach.
