New Delhi, Jul 6: Rising Indian hockey star Deepika has earned a prestigious nomination for the Poligras Magic Skill Award for the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League season, thanks to her breathtaking solo goal against top-ranked Netherlands earlier this year.
The international hockey federation (FIH) announced the shortlist for the award on Friday, and fan voting is open worldwide until July 14, 3:29 AM IST. The winner will be decided solely through global fan votes and will be announced after voting concludes.
Deepika’s moment of magic came in February 2025 during the Bhubaneswar leg of the Pro League at the Kalinga Stadium, where India drew 2–2 with the Netherlands before securing a memorable shootout victory.
Trailing 0–2 in the 35th minute, the 21-year-old forward delivered an electrifying field goal that reignited India’s momentum. She burst down the left flank, weaving through defenders with sharp footwork, skimmed along the baseline, lifted the ball over a defender’s stick with finesse, and sent a clean strike past the Dutch keeper to make it 1–2 — a moment that turned the tide in India’s favour.
“That goal against the Netherlands is one of the most special moments of my career,” Deepika said in response to her nomination.
“Everything just clicked, and it helped us equalise and eventually win. I’m honoured to be nominated and thankful for the incredible support from fans. It motivates me to keep giving my all for India. I also owe this to my teammates, coaches, and support staff.”
Other Nominations for the Poligras Magic Skill Award (Women’s Category):
• Patricia Alvarez (Spain): Displayed stunning 3D stick skills and composure against Australia, juggling the ball over the goalkeeper before slotting it home.
• Australia Women’s Team: Nominated for a beautiful team goal against England, involving a fluid sequence of five passes in the attacking half, ending with a clinical finish.
