Bantwal, Jul 9: A tragic incident occurred on the Vittal-Mudipu-Mangaluru route as a 43-year-old man succumbed to injuries after falling from a moving private bus.

The deceased has been identified as Chidananda Rai, a resident of Kodange in Kolnadu village. The mishap took place on Monday morning when Chidananda boarded the private bus from Vittal and was en route to Kudtamugeru.

Sources said Chidananda was standing on the footboard of the bus when he reportedly slipped and fell onto the road, sustaining what initially appeared to be minor injuries. Bus staff allegedly dismissed his condition as non-serious and advised him to disembark, stating he was fine.

Later in the evening, Chidananda — said to be battling alcohol addiction — suddenly fell ill. Alarmed by his deteriorating condition, locals rushed him to the Vittal Community Health Centre. He was later shifted to Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru for advanced care. However, despite efforts, Chidananda breathed his last on Tuesday.

Vittal police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
