Beltangady: Man sets fire to grocery store over payment dispute, arrested

Beltangady, Jul 11: A case has been registered based on a complaint by Sadakutulla (50), a resident of Kuvettu village here. The complainant runs a grocery store at Guruvayanakere in the same village. On the night of July 9, he locked his shop and went home.

On the morning of July 10, he received information that Umesh Bangera, a resident of Balanja village in Beltangady, had set fire to his shop. The complainant rushed to the spot and, with the help of locals, managed to extinguish the fire.

In the incident, two flex boards fixed to the shop were burnt, and ten plastic salt sacks were damaged. The accused reportedly owed money to the complainant for goods purchased earlier. Enraged when asked to repay the amount, the accused allegedly committed the act of arson.

The complainant stated he suffered a loss of Rs 3,000. A case has been registered at Beltangady police station under Crime No. 56/2025, Sections 326(f) and 324(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused has been taken into custody, and investigation is ongoing.
