Kaup, July 17: Continuous and widespread rainfall has been lashing Udupi district since the early hours of July 15. In the Padebettu area of Padubidri in Kaup taluk, rising water levels inundated several houses, prompting a swift rescue operation.

Under the leadership of Kaup tahsildar Pratibha R, 24 people from five houses were evacuated and shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure.

The heavy downpour has caused waterlogging and flooding in multiple areas across the district. Udupi, Brahmavar, Byndoor, Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala, and Kaup taluks reported significant disruption to daily life due to the rains.

Flooding in low-lying regions has intensified due to the overflow of the Kamini river, posing a risk to residents.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) carried out rescue operations in the affected areas to ensure public safety and minimise damage.

Authorities have urged people living near rivers and flood-prone zones to remain vigilant as rainfall is expected to continue. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.
