Bantwal, Jul 23: Senior Tulu theatre artiste and film actor Ramesh Kalladka (68) passed away on Wednesday morning following a heart attack at his residence in Kolakeeru, Kalladka. He is survived by a son and a daughter.

Ramesh Kalladka, who dedicated over three decades to theatre, was associated with the Kalasangama troupe led by Vijayakumar Kodialbail for the last 20 years. Trained under Kodialbail, Ramesh played significant roles in various social and mythological plays. His portrayal of Bheemarava in ‘Shivadhootaguli’ brought him widespread recognition, while his performance as Dada Konde in ‘Shivaji’ also drew praise.

Born in April 1957, Ramesh began his theatrical journey at a young age with the Mitrabalaga troupe led by Shantharam Kalladka. He later joined the Tuluvaappe Jokulu troupe and eventually stepped into the professional Tulu theatre scene. He also founded the Maitri Kalavidaru troupe in Kalladka, which regularly staged plays during the Sharadotsava celebrations.

Known for his discipline and gentle nature, Ramesh was one of the most senior and prominent actors in Kalasangama. He had performed in various cities including Mumbai and Bengaluru. Just two days ago, he had returned home after performing in a play.

Ramesh played memorable roles in several of Vijayakumar Kodialbail’s popular Tulu dramas such as Oriyardori Asal and Madime, and gained renewed fame in recent productions like Shivadhootaguli and Shivaji. Apart from theatre, he was actively involved in social service and served as the founding trustee of the Sharadotsava Committee in Kalladka, where he was also recognised as an accomplished anchor.

His demise is a significant loss to the Tulu theatre fraternity. The final rites were held at 11 am on Wednesday at the Rudrabhoomi in Kalladka.
