Udupi: Officer, assistant caught red-handed by Lokayukta while demanding bribe

Udupi, Jul 25: In a bribery case, Renuka, the deputy director of the audit department of the Udupi District Cooperative Society, and Jayaram, a first grade assistant, were caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police for demanding a bribe to conduct elections of a Souharda Cooperative Society.

The two had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 - Rs 5,000 each - to facilitate the administrative board elections of the Souharda Cooperative Society. Narendra, the chief executive officer of the Shantiniketan Souharda Cooperative Society, had filed a complaint regarding the bribe demand with the Udupi Lokayukta police.

Renuka was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe at her office in Udupi during a raid conducted by the Lokayukta police.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Mangaluru Lokayukta superintendent of police Kumarachandra. DySP Manjunath Shankarahalli, inspector Rajendra Nayak, and other officers were part of the team that executed the action.

    It’s also possible that this is an attempt to malign someone’s reputation out of jealousy—I can’t say for certain. In today’s climate of unofficial inflation and rising costs, even modest bribes of ₹5,000 or ₹10,000 may be quietly normalized. That said, the person lodging the complaint could be just as compromised as the one accused of taking the bribe. It's hard to tell who’s truly in the wrong.

    Well done ! Very much needed.Every department you go ,it's the same.. Without bribe nothing moves here.Its seriously disgusting! Every damn department openly ask for bribe and it's a known fact.
