Udupi, Jul 26: A case of theft has been registered against a site engineer in connection with the alleged misappropriation of construction materials worth Rs 3.84 lac from a private hospital site in Udupi, police officials confirmed on Saturday.

The complaint was lodged by Kushala (22), who serves as the safety in-charge for Sri Enterprises, a Pune-based construction company overseeing the hospital project. The discrepancy was discovered during a routine stock verification conducted on June 12, revealing that aluminium and other materials delivered in March and April were missing.

Suspicion soon fell on Anurag Kumar, a site engineer hailing from Bihar, who reportedly stopped attending work after April 21. According to a senior police official, Anurag is believed to have admitted to the theft but has not returned the stolen materials.

Following the complaint, the Malpe police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.

The incident has raised concerns over internal accountability at large-scale construction sites, with authorities stressing the importance of background verification and strict inventory audits.
