Mangalore, Feb 1: 'Imprints 2012' the annual national-level science fest organised by the BSc students of St Aloysius College began here on Wednesday February 1.

The theme of the fest is 'Science Fiction - The innovative Reality'.

Vice-chancellor of Nitte Unitersity Dr  Shantharam Shetty inaugurated the fest and in his address recalled the days he had spent as a student in St Aloysius Institution. He said that his alma mater had played a key role in shaping his career, and added that all credit for his success goes to St Aloysius school and college. He also appreciated the work done by the Jesuits in the field of education.

He also advised the students who were present in large numbers from various colleges to concentrate on their work and give their best in whatever they do. One must for for the progress of the country, he said, and urged the science students to use their skills and knowledge to take the country forward in the scientific field.

He also called for more creativity and innovation in the field of science, and appealed to the students to be ready to face any challenge. He spoke of three types of motivation, namely motivation out of fear, motivation in expectation of reward or award, and self-motivation. Among the three, the third one is the best, he added.

St Aloysius Institutions rector Fr Joseph Rodrigues presided. Addressing the gathering, he said one should keep updating one's knowledge and be self-motivated in order to excel. He too urged the students to bring about innovation in the field of science.

Staff co-ordinator Dr Hemachandra welcomed. Prof Prakash Kamath proposed the vote of thanks.

Students from various colleges exhibited their science models and experiments during the fest. There will also be several competitions designed to test their knowledge and skills.
