Mangaluru, Jul 29: In a tragic incident in Mennabettu village under the Kinnigoli town panchayat limits, a leopard that had reportedly chased a dog fell into a well and died after coming into contact with electric wiring from a motor pump early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at the residence of Robert, a local resident, who woke up around 5:30 am on July 28 and turned on the motor to draw water from his well. When no water came even after 20 minutes, he peered into the well and was shocked to find a leopard floating in it. He immediately turned off the motor and alerted the forest department.

Upon checking the well again after some time, Robert noticed the leopard had apparently bitten the wires attached to the motor. Forest officials and veterinarians later arrived at the spot and confirmed that the animal had died.

Robert owns four dogs, which he usually secures inside at night. However, neighbours had left one of their dogs outside. It is suspected that the leopard may have chased the dog and accidentally fallen into the well.

The leopard reportedly tried to climb out using a pipe and rope attached to the pump, both of which it bit and damaged. It had also attempted to escape using the well’s inner wall, which eventually gave way.

Forest officials recovered the leopard’s body and conducted a post-mortem examination.
