India U20 women held to goalless draw by Indonesia in AFC Qualifiers opener

Yangon, Aug 6: India's U20 women’s football team opened their AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Indonesia at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.

In a tightly contested Group D fixture, both sides failed to break the deadlock, despite creating several scoring opportunities. The result leaves India with one point, trailing behind hosts Myanmar, who secured a commanding 6-1 victory over Turkmenistan earlier in the day to top the group.

Midfield Battle Dominates First Half

The match kicked off with high intensity, with both teams battling to gain control in midfield. India settled in quickly, showcasing better ball retention and building attacks, particularly down the flanks.

A notable early chance came in the 6th minute when Neha’s curling cross from the left created chaos in the Indonesian box. However, Pooja and Sulanjana Raul failed to connect at the far post.

As the first half progressed, India tried their luck from distance. Sulanjana came close, narrowly missing the target, while Pooja’s effort was comfortably saved by Indonesia goalkeeper Alleana Ayu Arumy.

Second Half Sees Indian Pressure Build

India continued to push forward after the break, with Neha remaining a constant threat on the left wing. However, the Indonesian defence stayed compact and disciplined, managing to neutralize her runs.

With about 20 minutes remaining, India upped the tempo, pressing high and forcing errors. Midfielder Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam intercepted a ball in the final third and cut it back to substitute Babita Kumari, but the chance went begging.

Sibani again tried to connect with Babita moments later, but Alleana made a confident collection of the cross.

Indonesia Nearly Steal It Late On

Indonesia had their best opportunity in the 87th minute, when substitute Ajeng Sri Handayani broke past the Indian defence and tried to slot the ball into the far corner. However, Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem made a crucial low save, with Thoibisana Chanu Toijam clearing the danger.

India responded with two late free-kick chances, both delivered by Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam from opposite flanks during stoppage time. While both efforts were on target, Alleana pulled off two important saves to keep her side level.

Next Match: India vs Turkmenistan

After this goalless draw, India will look to bounce back when they face Turkmenistan in their second Group D match on Friday at the same venue.

The Young Tigresses will be hoping for a win to stay in the hunt for qualification to the next round of the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
