Kisumu, Aug 9: In a tragic incident, at least 21 people lost their lives when a bus carrying mourners from a funeral overturned and plunged into a ditch in southwestern Kenya on Friday evening.

According to police, the ill-fated bus was travelling from Kakamega to Kisumu when the driver, approaching a roundabout at high speed, lost control and veered into a ditch. The accident occurred in Nyanza province, where Kisumu is located.

Peter Maina, the regional traffic enforcement officer, confirmed that the deceased included 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl.

Kenya has a high rate of road accidents, with speeding, poor road conditions, and narrow, pothole-filled routes often to blame.

In a separate accident on Thursday, nine people were killed in Naivasha, Nakuru county, when a bus carrying 32 workers to their workplace crashed at a railway crossing.
