Liverpool, Aug 10: Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has drawn widespread admiration after questioning UEFA over a tribute post for Suleiman al-Obeid, the late “Palestinian Pele” who was killed in southern Gaza during an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid.
Responding to UEFA’s post—which did not mention the cause or circumstances of al-Obeid’s death—Salah asked on X (formerly Twitter), “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” The message quickly went viral, amassing over 61 million views and thousands of supportive comments.
Fans praised Salah for taking a bold political stance, with many applauding his courage despite the potential risk to his Ballon d’Or prospects. “This ends any slim hope Salah had of winning the Ballon d’Or… but some matters go beyond football,” commented one user.
Salah has previously spoken out about the Palestinian cause, urging world leaders to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and prevent further civilian casualties. Other footballers like Paul Pogba, Son Heung-Min, Sam Morsy, and Ibrahima Konate have also voiced support for Palestine.
