New Delhi, Aug 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating the 79th Independence Day from the Red Fort on Thursday, with Operation Sindoor emerging as the highlight of the event. The Prime Minister unfurled the tricolour and addressed the nation under the theme ‘Naya Bharat’, symbolising the vision of a secure, prosperous and self-reliant India.

Operation Sindoor, executed in May as India’s strongest retaliatory action against Pakistan-backed terror bases, was prominently mentioned in the Prime Minister’s speech. Floral displays and official decorations across Delhi showcased the operation’s insignia, while the Red Fort stage also carried its emblem.

Thirteen officers, including nine from the Indian Air Force and four from the Army, were honoured with the Vir Chakra, while seven senior officers received the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for their exceptional role in the tri-service mission. A special helicopter fly-past saluted the armed forces.

Security was at its peak with over 40,000 paramilitary personnel, NSG commandos, snipers, rooftop surveillance, 1,000 CCTV cameras, anti-drone systems, air defence guns and a strict kite-flying ban in place.

Around 5,000 special guests and 1,500 participants from across the country attended the celebrations, many in traditional attire, marking the day with unity and patriotic fervour.
