Shivamogga, Aug 15: In a powerful display of environmental stewardship and community solidarity, the Stree Bandhu Federation of Abbalagere under the guidance of The Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society ® (SMSSS) Shimoga marked Independence Day by planting 600 saplings and inaugurating a green space named “Vanitha Vana” (Women’s Forest).

The event, held on the morning of August 15, brought together local leaders, social workers, and members of various Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in a collective effort to promote sustainability and women-led ecological action.

Chief guest Fr Pius D’Souza, director of The Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS), lauded the initiative, calling it “a living symbol of freedom, responsibility, and hope.” He emphasized the importance of community-driven environmental efforts and praised the Federation’s commitment to nurturing nature. Also present were:

• Rajappa, Panchayat Development Officer (PDO), Abbalagere Gram Panchayath

• Bhagyamma president of Abbalagere Gram Panchayath

• President and members of Stree Bandhu Fedration, Abbalagere

• Pramila Daizy, filed coordinator, SMSSS

• Theresa, animator, SMSSS

Each sapling planted was assigned to a self-help group, entrusting them with the responsibility of nurturing and protecting the young trees. This decentralized care model ensures long-term sustainability and strengthens the bond between women’s collectives and environmental conservation.

Bhagyamma, in her presidential address, stated, “Vanitha Vana is not just a forest—it’s a legacy of care, resilience, and unity. Every tree here will grow with the love and commitment of our women.”

The event concluded with a pledge by all SHG members to monitor the growth of their assigned saplings and contribute to a greener Abbalagere. The Federation plans to organize monthly check-ins and awareness sessions to ensure the health of the plantation.

Vanitha Vana stands as a testament to the power of grassroots action, blending ecological responsibility with women’s empowerment an inspiring model for communities across the region. Local governance and community praised the Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society for motivating women federation for Ecological action.
