Mangaluru, Aug 15: St Anthony’s Destitute Home, Jeppu, celebrated both the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven and India’s Independence Day with great devotion and patriotism on Friday, August 15.

The celebration began with a solemn holy Mass, presided over by Fr Alwyn D’Souza, guardian, St Zuze Vaz Senior Priests’ Home and director of the Family Life Service Centre, who was the main celebrant. Concelebrating with him were Fr J B Crasta, Fr Gilbert, Fr Praveen, and Fr Vivian. In his homily, Fr Alwyn highlighted the need for both spiritual freedom and freedom from external bondage, reminding everyone that true liberation begins in the heart.

After the Mass, the national flag was unfurled by Fr Alwyn, who also paid respect to the tricolour. This was followed by a rhythmic march past by the residents and students, displaying discipline and unity. The institution’s brass band played stirring patriotic tunes, adding grandeur to the occasion. Patriotic songs and dances were also presented by the residents and students, filling the atmosphere with pride and joy. The programme was directed by Fr Vivian the assistant director.

In his address, Fr Alwyn said, “True freedom comes through a life of service, and peace is essential for all of us in society. We must respect our nation, its Constitution, and cooperate with the authorities. Let us thank the Almighty for the peace and joy we enjoy today.”

The prayer song was rendered beautifully by Solita and team. The Wise Men’s Club of Mangaluru joined the celebration and sponsored sweets for all. Princita welcomed the gathering, Lohith proposed the vote of thanks, and Shanneal ably compered the programme.

The celebration concluded with a spirit of gratitude to God and renewed commitment to live as responsible citizens and faithful children of Our Lady.
