Mangaluru, Aug 15: The parishioners of St Sebastian Church, Bendur, joyfully came together on August 15 to celebrate two significant occasions – the Feast of the Assumption of Mother Mary and the 78th Independence Day of the nation.
The celebration began with the solemn Eucharistic Mass at 6:30 am. Fr Walter D’Souza, vicar, was the main celebrant, assisted by Fr Arun Lobo. In his homily, Fr Arun beautifully reflected on the significance of the Assumption of Mother Mary, drawing a parallel between Mary’s heavenly glory and the blessings of freedom that our country enjoys.

Following the Mass, the parishioners assembled in the church premises for the flag-hoisting ceremony organized by the Catholic Action League (CAL). Samuel Rodrigues, president of CAL, extended a warm welcome to all present. The national flag was then hoisted by the vicar, Fr Walter D’Souza, while the gathering paid their respects with a salute, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
In his Independence Day message, Fr Walter highlighted the values of unity, peace, and service, drawing inspiration from Mother Mary’s life and her assumption into heaven. He encouraged everyone to work towards building a just and harmonious society rooted in love and faith.
The CAL members further enhanced the patriotic atmosphere with a melodious rendition of a patriotic song, which was received with much appreciation by the crowd. Paloma Monteiro, secretary of CAL, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the day’s success. The programme was ably compered by Anna Patrao, ensuring smooth proceedings.
To conclude the celebration, sweets were distributed to all attendees, adding a touch of joy and fellowship to the memorable morning. The twin celebrations of faith and patriotism at St Sebastian Church, Bendur, truly embodied the spirit of devotion and love for the nation, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of all who participated.
