Dakshina Kannada records moderate rain; ‘Yellow Alert’ issued for Aug 20

Mangaluru, Aug 20: Dakshina Kannada district witnessed widespread rainfall on Tuesday, with Mangaluru city receiving moderate showers amid sunny and cloudy spells.

Rain was reported from Puttur, Uppinangady, Karaya, Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Panja, Vittla, Suratkal, Ullal, Kanyana, Beltangady, Madanthyar and Dharmasthala.

According to official data till 8.30 am on August 19, Belthangady taluk recorded 46.4 mm rainfall, followed by Puttur 23.2 mm, Bantwal 21.9 mm, Sullia 20.2 mm, Moodbidri 34 mm, Kadaba 39.9 mm, Mulki 23.9 mm, Ullal 9.4 mm, while Mangaluru city received 10.8 mm rainfall. The district average stood at 31 mm.

The rains caused partial damage to 11 houses, while 54 electricity poles were damaged across the district.

Rescue and relief teams have been kept on standby. Fifteen SDRF and civil defence personnel have been deployed in Mangaluru, 10 members in Subrahmanya, and a 25-member NDRF team stationed at Puttur. A total of 26 boats are ready for emergency operations.

With the possibility of continued showers along the coastal belt, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for August 20.
